Cracks are showing in the less than a year old AAP government in Punjab, with its MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh on Wednesday resigning as the chairman of the Committee on Government Assurances of the Legislative Assembly over the government’s “inaction” in the 2015 sacrilege cases. gave.

Officials said that Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has not yet accepted his resignation.

Pratap, MLA from Amritsar (North), is said to be upset with the “inaction” in the investigation of highly sensitive sacrilege cases. He also expressed displeasure on some occasions.

Before joining politics, Pratap was a former Inspector General of Police and headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2015 Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police firing cases. These incidents took place after the alleged desecration of a religious text in Faridkot.

The 1998-batch Punjab cadre officer had resigned ahead of the assembly elections after the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed the probe by the SIT into the Kotkapura firing incident.
