Aadhaar-PAN Not Linked? Income Tax Refund Can’t Be Issued, NRI Gets Message

New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has been postponing the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline multiple times from March 31, 2022, though it is slated to end on June 30, 2023. The last deadline to link PAN card with Aadhaar card was June 30, 2023, after which the financial document would become inoperative.

Meanwhile, an NRI taxpayer has posted on his Twitter that he has filed his tax return (ITR for AY 2023-24) but when he tried to check the refund status, a message came that Since his PAN card was inoperative, the refund could not be made. be issued.

The message said, “Refund could not be issued as PAN is inoperative, please link your PAN with Aadhaar after paying the required fee under section 234H.”

PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline and its consequences

On March 28, 2023, the Income Tax Department had said that the date for intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for linking PAN and Aadhaar has now been extended till June 30, 2023.

With effect from July 1, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar as required will become inoperative and the consequences during the period of inactivity of PAN will be as follows:

A. No refund will be granted against such PAN;

B. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which the PAN remains inoperative; And

c. TDS will be deducted/collected at higher rate as per provision in TCS Act.

PAN can be reactivated in 30 days by intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of a fee of Rs 1,000.

The persons who are exempted from PAN-Aadhaar linking will not be liable for the consequences mentioned above. This category includes a non-resident as per the Act, a person who is not a citizen of India or a person of the age of eighty years or more at any time during the previous year, residing in the specified states.
