Aadhaar card update: NRIs will not have to wait more than 6 months to apply for Aadhaar

NS Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the issuing body for Aadhaar, one of the most important pieces of identity that an Indian citizen can carry nowadays. Due to its high degree of integration into the daily aspects of life, it has acquired significant importance. Aadhaar is available to Indian citizens as well as to non-resident Indians (NRI). Where NRIs previously had to go through a mandatory waiting period, they no longer need it.

In May 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had proposed that NRIs holding Indian passports should be given an Aadhaar card on arrival in India without a mandatory waiting period. This proposal was introduced during the Union Budget. During the budget announcement, he suggested that NRIs should skip the waiting period of 180 days.

Recently on August 26, 2021, UIDAI also issued a tweet regarding the same, in which the institution informed citizens that NRIs need not wait for 182 days. The tweet further said that NRIs with valid Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar on arrival in India.

The tweet read: “Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) need not wait for 182 days. NRIs with valid #Indian #Passport can apply for #Aadhaar on arrival. Visit your nearest #Aadhaar Enrollment Center at: https: http://appointments.uidai.gov.in/easearch.aspx. For more information, call 1947 or write to us at help@uidai.gov.in.”

Aadhaar Application Process for NRIs: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Start by visiting any Aadhaar enrollment center near you and make sure you carry a valid Indian passport with you when you go there.

Step 2: Then you have to fill the details in the enrollment form which the Aadhar Enrollment Officer gives you.

Step 3: Make sure you complete the declaration for NRI enrollment, which is a bit different from the normal process. Read and sign it on your enrollment form.

Step 4: Ask the operator to enroll you as an NRI.

Step 5: Give your passport as proof of identity to the Enrollment Officer handling the process. You can choose to use your passport as proof of address and date of birth or provide any other valid document. Ideally, you want to use Passport across the board.

Step 6: You have to complete the biometric capture process, which involves giving fingerprints of all 10 fingers. You will also need to undergo an iris scan to add to your biometric data verification.

Step 7: You will have to provide a passport size photograph. The government does not accept store photos and therefore will take your photo on the spot and print it.

Step 8: Check all the details on the screen (in English and local language) before allowing the operator to submit his/her application.

Step 9: Collect the acknowledgment slip/enrollment slip containing your 14 digit enrollment ID and date and time stamp. You will need to wait for the normal 90 days like an average citizen as this is the time taken for generation and dispatch of a typical Aadhar card. You can track the progress online using your enrollment number provided by the enrollment centre.
