‘A proud moment’: India captain Yash Dhul praises teammates and support staff after U19 WC triumph

After winning a record 5th Under-19 World Cup title, captain Yash Dhul on Saturday said it is a proud moment for India.

India performed brilliantly, beating England by four wickets in the final. Shaik Rashid (50 off 84) and Nishant Sindhu scored fifties, while Raj Bawa (35 off 54) also played crucial knocks to help India chase down a small but difficult target in 47.4 overs.

“It’s a proud moment for India. It was good batting and a good comeback for England. But we kept our mind calm and focused,” said Dhul in the post-match presentation.

“It was difficult to get the combination right in the beginning. But as time passed we became a family and the team atmosphere was good.”

The captain also credited the team’s success to the support staff.

“It is great to be coached by VVS Laxman sir, Hrishikesh Kanitkar sir and others,” he added.

This is India’s record fifth Under-19 World Cup title in the history of the tournament after winning in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018. The Yash Dhul-led side finished the tournament with an unbeaten run in the West Indies, showcasing the might of the assembly. India’s next generation of cricketers.

With this, Dhul joins the illustrious list of captains – Mohammad Kaif (2000), Virat Kohli (2008), Unmukt Chand (2012), Prithvi Shaw (2018) – who have won the Under-19 trophy for India in the past.

Earlier, stellar bowling performances from Raj Bawa (5/31) and Ravi Kumar (4/34) helped India bundle out England for 189 despite James Ray (95) hitting half-centuries.

At 91/7, England were in deep trouble but a crucial eighth wicket partnership from Rev and James Sells took England to a competitive total in the summit clash.

Chasing a challenging target, India got off to a poor start. However, Nishant Sindhu kept her spirits up and scored a brilliant half-century to take India to the pinnacle of victory. It was Raj Bawa – the star of the day – who hit a couple of sixes and took India to the winning line in style.
