A new hybrid variety of mango has anti-cancer properties, which may lower blood sugar levels, study says

For those who are avoiding mangoes due to health issues including diabetes, here is some good news.

The Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, (CISH) Lucknow has developed healthy varieties of mango with bioactive compounds that have high medicinal benefits including anti-cancer properties.

Shailendra Rajan, Director, CISH said, “In fact, it is a great success for us. Mango is the most preferred fruit and among many hybrid varieties of mango, the researchers found that ‘Arunica’ developed by CISH contains organic compounds including mangiferin and lupeol content. -was rich in active compounds.”

He further added, “The reddish-reddish arunika has great medicinal properties. The bioactive compounds present in this variety lower blood sugar levels by inhibiting the absorption of glucose in the intestine, whereas mangiferin has been shown to prevent breast and colon cancer. Helps save.”

Another variety of medicinal mango developed by CISH is “Saheb Pasand” which, he said, was the sweetest variety of mango which was high in lupeol content. The compound is known to have a wide range of pharmacological activities against a variety of diseases, including inflammation, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver toxicity, microbial infections and cancer.

He said that the institute is ready with the variety, however, the pulp testing is still on to compare these hybrid mangoes with other available varieties in terms of medicinal content.

Rajan said that in the near future, the cultivation of these special varieties of mango will give better income to the farmers and health benefits to the consumers.
