Gill’s flamboyant knock made him only the second Indian batsman after Virat Kohli (2016) and the fourth in history after Jos Buttler (2022) and David Warner (2016), to score more than 800 runs in an IPL season.

Gill hit MI hero Akash Madhwal (1/53) for three sixes in the 12th over to cross the 800-run mark and single-handedly lead Gujarat Titans.

He brought up his half-century in 32 balls, hitting two sixes and three fours, against fast bowlers and spinners alike at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium here.

Gill also surpassed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 62-ball 124 to set the record for the highest individual score this season as Mumbai Indians finished on the receiving end on both occasions.

In the process, the 23-year-old also went past RCB’s Faf du Plessis (730 runs) to claim the Orange Cap, which he had forgotten about in the mid-innings presentation.

Gill said, “I went to the washroom and I didn’t know if I would be wearing this (orange cap).”

Additionally, Gill’s 129 surpassed Virender Sehwag’s 122 against Chennai Super Kings in the 2014 season as the highest score for a batsman in the IPL playoffs.

A crucial moment came at the end of the sixth over when Tim David dropped a catch at mid-on to give Gill a life, as GT ended the powerplay at 50/0.

Mumbai got their first breakthrough in the seventh over when Piyush Chawla stumped Wriddhiman Saha (18) on a leg ball.

Gill certainly had a run of luck as he managed to make two saves off Kumar Karthikeya.

Asked about the runs scored by him and GT’s total of 233/3, Gill said: “Got a good total, hope we defend it. Got a lot of sweat in my eyes and I can’t open them We have played our best cricket when we have lost and this is one of those days.”

“It plays a role, you have to know which side to target, if it is big boundaries and they bowl in good areas, look for doubles, short boundaries take it. There was not much grass on that wicket, the ball was coming in well and the outfield was wet and it stopped swinging after 2 overs.”
