The Salt March, popularly known as the Dandi March, was started on 12 March 1930.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the 92nd anniversary of the Dandi March. PM Modi tweeted, “Tributes to Gandhi ji and all those great personalities who marched till Dandi to protest injustice and protect our nation’s self-respect.” He also shared the video of his speech “2019 Se Jab National Salt Satyagraha Memorial at Dandi Dedicated to the nation.”

Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in freeing the country from British colonial rule. He led various movements like Non-cooperation Movement, Khilafat Movement, Quit India Movement etc. One such movement that played an important role in shaping the history of the Indian freedom struggle was the Salt March. The Salt March, popularly known as the Dandi March, was started on 12 March 1930.

The march was organized by Mahatma Gandhi from his Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to Dandi village in the state’s coastal region.

As we begin the 92nd anniversary of the revolutionary movement, let’s look at some of the facts that made the move historic:

  • The Dandi March was a 24-day long march that began on 12 March and ended on 6 April 1930.
  • It is also called Dandi Satyagraha and it was non-violent.
  • The march was started with only 80 people but by the time it reached its destination, the number increased to 50,000.
  • People protested against the salt laws by walking 390 km along with Gandhiji.
  • The mass movement under the leadership of Gandhi was one of the first movements to raise voice against the misrule of the British.
  • The march began in protest against the British rule which had prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt. Due to the monopoly of the British government, they sold salt with heavy taxes on it and Indians were forced to buy from them.
  • After reaching Dandi, Gandhi broke the salt law imposed by the British government by producing illegal salt on the beaches.
  • After Gandhiji’s move, various people started breaking the law by producing, selling and buying illegal salt. This gave rise to the civil disobedience movement on a large scale.
  • Interestingly, no one was arrested after Gandhiji’s big step of breaking the law. Even the movement received national and international coverage. This movement lasted for about two months.
  • In May 1930, when the movement gained huge popularity and the British considered it their defeat, various people including Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were arrested.
  • By the end of 1930, more than 60,000 people had been arrested. However, Gandhi was released from prison in January 1931.
  • After coming out of prison, Gandhi held meetings with Lord Irwin, which led to the Gandhi-Irwin Pact, which was signed on March 5, 1931.
