Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan had asked the makers of Hum Aapke Hain Koun to cut two songs to reduce the run-time of the film.
Many remember Hum Aapke Hain Koun with a smile on their face and nostalgia in their heart. A film which became a massive hit and managed to pull many people to the theatres, it was loved by all. But that wasn’t the case initially when the film was shown to industry insiders, who found its long running time – a little over three hours – difficult to sit through. In a 2014 video, directors Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan recounted some memorable moments from the film at the age of 20. The director revealed that only two people appreciated the film, Salman’s father, screenwriter-producer Salim Khan and YRF felicitated Aditya Chopra. Sooraj shared that there were 14 songs in his film, but Salim Khan advised him to get rid of two songs from the film – Chocolate Lime Juice and Mujhse Judha Hokkar. Therefore, these songs have been broadcast on television, but are nowhere to be found in film. The director further said that the collection of his venture grew exponentially after the removal of two songs.
Hum Aapke Hain Koun became one of the highest grossing films of all time and also did good business in the overseas market. The film recently completed 27 years. It also starred Mohnish Behl, Renuka Shahane, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo, Alok Nath, Satish Shah and Himani Shivpuri in supporting roles. The plot revolves around Nisha (played by Madhuri) and Prem (Salman), how they meet for the first time when their siblings’ match is being arranged to see how they eventually fall in love. The trials and tribulations they face before reuniting are the crux of this love story.
