19 injured including Tripura Congress President in clash with BJP

At least 19 people, including Tripura PCC chief Birjit Sinha, were injured in a clash between Congress and BJP supporters in front of Congress Bhawan here on Sunday. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, which broke out after the bypoll results for four assembly seats were declared. BJP won three seats and Congress one seat. The entire post office Chowmuhani area where Congress Bhawan is located was deserted after the clash.

“Jubilant Congress supporters along with Sudip Roy Burman, the winning candidate for Agartala assembly seat, returned to Congress Bhawan from the counting hall at around 1 pm. “While they were preparing lunch, a strong group of BJP supporters attacked Congress Bhawan. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president was hit on the head with bricks while a Congress worker identified as Romi Miya was stabbed by BJP supporters,” Congress media in-charge Ashish Kumar Saha said. He alleged that BJP supporters, led by a Yuva Morcha leader, rained bricks on the building and damaged several motorcycles parked in front of it.

Saha alleged that the police remained silent when the attack took place. On the other hand, Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushant Choudhary alleged that Congress supporters had hurled bricks at Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) BJP councilor Shilpi Sen earlier in the day and that incident angered the party supporters.

“Around six supporters of our party were injured in the Congress-sponsored attack. They are trying to create trouble by winning one of the four assembly seats in the by-elections. They are dreaming of returning to power with the help of CPI(M). Police said three people have been admitted to the hospital but no FIR has been registered so far. “The TPCC president has been admitted to a private hospital. The Congress supporter who was stabbed is also undergoing treatment. A BJP supporter, identified as Vishal Chakraborty, suffered a head injury and received 12 stitches.

A Congress delegation led by Roy Burman met the West Tripura Superintendent of Police and handed over a delegation on the incident. Choudhary said BJP leaders have also met police officials and demanded action against those involved in the attack on the BJP councilor and others.
