Dibrugarh: 17 shops and five residential buildings were damaged in a massive fire that broke out in the New Market in the heart of the city in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to locals, the fire started in an optician’s shop around 3 am and then spread to other shops as well. The fire, which started early in the morning due to wind, quickly spread to nearby shops and engulfed them in no time. About 90% of the shops destroyed in the fire were clothes shops, in which fresh stock was deposited in view of the upcoming Rongali Bihu,
