New Delhi: On Wednesday, 17 people died and 24 others went missing due to cloudburst in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, according to news agencies reports.
Cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir caused cloudburst in Dachan and Bujawa areas of Kishtwar, the holy cave of Amarnath in South Kashmir Himalayas, Bandipora in North Kashmir. Whereas The cloudburst caused devastation in Kargil in Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts of Himachal.
Seven bodies were recovered from the worst-hit Dachin area of Kishtwar, while one person drowned in the swollen Saktoi drain of Rajouri district. The death toll in Jammu and Kashmir rose to 8 on Wednesday, officials were quoted as saying by PTI.
Dozens of residential houses, several bridges and a mini hydroelectric project have been destroyed, officials told PTI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and said that the Center is closely monitoring the situation. He assured that all possible assistance is being provided to the affected areas.
At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and DGP Dilbag Singh to take stock of the situation arising out of the cloudburst.
LG Sinha announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of each of the deceased in Kishtwar, he said, adding that the seriously injured would get Rs 50,000 and under SDRF Rs 12,700.
Kishtwar District Development Commissioner (DDC) Ashok Kumar Sharma said, “Seventeen people were rescued and taken to hospital. The condition of three of them is stated to be critical.”
“There has been some damage to the infrastructure, including three bridges, but the exact details are awaited,” Sharma said. Around 60 families have been safely evacuated from Paddar area.
The cloud burst at around 4.30 am on Wednesday, causing sudden floods in the village on the banks of the river, police officials said.
Search and rescue operation for the missing people is on.
Meanwhile, a mini hydroelectric project was damaged due to two cloudbursts in Sangra and Khangraal areas of Kargil in Ladakh on Tuesday evening. A dozen residential houses and standing crops have been destroyed. Officials told PTI that no casualties were reported in the double cloudburst.
In Himachal Pradesh, at least nine people died and seven went missing in flash floods at two places in Himachal Pradesh in the last 24 hours. Officials gave this information on Wednesday.
Seven people were washed away in flash floods due to cloudburst in Tojing drain of Udaipur sub-division of Lahaul-Spiti district, killing two in Chamba district.
While in Manikaran in Kullu district, four people died due to drowning in the overflowing Parvati river.
State Disaster Management Authority special secretary Sudesh Mokhta told reporters that the search operation is on to trace the three people missing from the flash floods in Lahaul-Spiti.
With more rains predicted till the end of July, officials have asked people living in reservoirs and landslide prone areas to remain alert.
