BangladeshAt least 17 people were killed and 30 others injured when a speeding bus fell into a gorge in Bangladesh on Sunday. This information was given in the media reports. According to police, the Dhaka-bound bus driven by Imad Paribhan went out of control on an expressway in Madaripur around 7.30 am.

Police said the death toll was expected to rise as the condition of many of the injured was critical. Madaripur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Masood Alam said the injured have been admitted to various hospitals.

“It is believed that negligent driving and mechanical fault in the bus caused the accident,” Alam was quoted as saying by a news portal bdnews24. Shiplu Ahmed, deputy assistant director of fire service, Faridpur, said, “It is believed that the speeding bus suffered a tire burst and lost control and fell into a ditch and collided head-on.”

Three units of the fire service are carrying out rescue operations, said Lima Khanum, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters, which is conducting the rescue operation. He said that the identity of the dead and injured is yet to be ascertained.

Shonadanga bus counter counter man MD Sabuj Khan told The Daily Star newspaper that the Imad Paribhan bus left for Dhaka with over 43 passengers.

Road accidents are common in Bangladesh due to old and poorly maintained vehicles and roads, as well as poorly trained drivers.
