A senior police officer said that the detained students were released after the Republic Day parade on Thursday.

Thirteen students, who were detained for organizing a screening of BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots at Jamia Millia Islamia, were released on Wednesday.

The government recently directed social media platforms to block links to a documentary titled ‘India: The Modi Question’. The Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed the documentary as a “piece of propaganda”, which lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

Hundreds of students were detained on Wednesday as they gathered outside the university gate to protest against the detention of four student unions India (SFI) worker hours before the proposed screening.

The SFI had claimed that the police released most of the detained students on Wednesday evening, but 13 remained in custody.

The SFI on Wednesday announced a demonstration of ‘India: The Modi Question’.

The students’ body alleged that four of the 13 detained students – SFI Jamia unit secretary Aziz, SFI South Delhi zone vice-president Nivedya and units members Abhiram and Tejas were detained on Wednesday morning.

He told that all four are students of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Four students were taken into custody on Wednesday morning. It has been more than 24 hours since he was taken into custody. The rest were taken into custody later in the evening,” said Pritish Menon, secretary of the SFI Delhi committee.

The university became the center of an uproar on Wednesday after the SFI’s plan to organize a screening of a controversial BBC documentary was thwarted by the university and the police.
