12-year-old Indian-origin Abhimanyu Mishra becomes youngest Chess Grandmaster

12-year-old Indian-origin Abhimanyu Mishra on Wednesday became the youngest Grandmaster in chess. Hailing from New Jersey, Abhimanyu broke the record of 12 years 7 months set by GM Sergei Karjakin in 2002.

Karjakin won the title of Grandmaster at the age of 12 years and 7 months.

According to a statement by Chess.com, Mishra, born on 5 February 2009, defeated 15-year-old Indian GM Leon Luke Mendonka by Blackpeace to claim the highest title in chess.

He achieved a performance rating of over 2600 in nine rounds, which constitutes a GM benchmark. After a stay in Budapest, Abhimanyu won his first GM Criterion in the April Vezarkepzo tournament and the second at the first Saturday tournament in May 2021.
