11 years of Ayesha: Sonam Kapoor says ‘my sister and I were bullied by some men in Bollywood’

Sonam Kapoor’s 2010 comedy-drama Ayesha took over Bollywood It has taken fashion to the next level with its designer wears, trendy outfits and unique dialogues. An adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, the film opened to mixed reviews but established Sonam as the best fashionista in B-town. Despite being an established actor now, the journey was not easy for Sonam and her sister Rhea Kapoor, who produced the film.

As the film completed 11 years, the Kapoor sisters held a session at the clubhouse where they opened up on some of their struggles and comments they had to come across for the film.

Sonam can undoubtedly make heads turn with her top fashion sense. However, there have been times when she has to be ridiculed for dressing up, reveals Rhea. He said, ‘There was a time when people used to laugh and make fun of us after the release of the film. I remember this incident, where we were at a party, and a budding director, now well established, now looked at Sonam’s outfit and said, ‘Where is Sonam Kapoor going in this outfit?'”

Talking about how her sister loved dressing up since childhood, Rhea recalled that Sonam used to sit at home wearing ‘mangtika’. She also revealed that people made fun of her for wearing her clothes.

In Ayesha, Sonam played the role of an upper-class girl with a superficial lifestyle who constantly interfered in her friend’s life.

Talking about the film’s reception, Sonam said that people who praised her for her previous films Saawariya and Delhi 6, misquoted her character in Ayesha. She had become an easy target, the actress said. Sonam also expressed that being an insider in the industry, people who grow up stop supporting her once she enters the industry.

“The fashion industry supported me more than the film industry. In the film industry, I was like a fish out of water, but the fashion industry understood me,” the actress revealed.

However, the Kapoor sisters shared that being with each other kept them away from everything.

“What many people don’t know about Ayesha is that the film has become more accepted and successful many years after its release. Gal Meethi Meethi Bol was the only thing that was an outright success. The film made a little bit of money, but the debut I got a lot of hate in it. People thought we made this film just because we could, but the release of the film forced both of us to grow up a lot.”

“As women, we do not feel that there is more power in numbers. The way my sister and I were bullied during the film-making process by some men in the industry made us realize that when you’re more together, it’s easier to stand up for things and give each other strength . So that’s the only thing that was a takeaway from Ayesha that I always knew my sister was my best friend,” concluded Sonam Kapoor.
