1.47 lakh children lost their parents during the Corona period: 76 thousand boys and 70 thousand girls among children; NCPCR gave information in Supreme Court

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has informed the Supreme Court that since April 2020, 1 lakh 47 thousand 492 children of the country have lost one or both of their parents due to corona and other reasons. This includes 76,508 boys, 70,980 girls and 4 transgender children.

The NCPCR said that their data is based on information provided by the states and union territories on the Bal Swaraj Portal-Kovid Care. The commission said that according to the data till January 11, since April 2020, 10,094 children were orphaned in the country, 1 lakh 36 thousand 910 children lost a parent and 488 children were abandoned by their parents. Altogether this number is 1,47,492.

Other highlights of the report-

  • Among these children, the maximum 59,010 children are between the ages of 8 and 13. This is followed by 22,763 children in the age group of 14 to 15 years. There are 22,626 children in the age group of 16 to 18 years and 26,080 in the age group of 4 to 7 years.
  • Of these, 1,25,205 children are with their parents, 11,272 children are living with a family member while 8,450 are under the care of another guardian.
  • 1,529 children are in a children’s home, 19 children are in shelter home, 2 children are in observation home, 188 are in orphanage, 66 children are in special adoption agency and 39 children are in hostel.
  • Out of these 24,405 children from Odisha, 19,623 children from Maharashtra, 14,770 children from Gujarat, 11,014 children from Tamil Nadu, 9,247 from Uttar Pradesh, 8,760 children from Andhra Pradesh, 7,340 children from Madhya Pradesh, 6,835 children from West Bengal, 6,629 from Delhi. And there are 6,827 children from Rajasthan.

The commission said that it is ensuring that children are not affected in any way in this epidemic. In this regard, in a virtual meeting with the State Commission, the commission is taking stock of their preparedness to protect the interests of the children.
