The passport of former Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti expired in 2019.

Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has got a regular passport. The passport issued to Mehbooba has a validity of 10 years i.e. from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2033. After a long legal battle in the Delhi High Court, Mehbooba got the passport.

The validity of Mehbooba’s old passport had expired in 2019. He had applied for passport renewal, but the passport office did not renew his passport citing a negative report from the J&K Police.

Application was filed in the High Court
After this, Mehbooba filed an application in the Delhi High Court. In the court, he said that despite several reminders, there is a lot of delay in issuing the passport to him. He had said that no decision was being taken on his appeal. The counsel for the central government had informed the court that the matter has been sent to the passport officer in Jammu and Kashmir for fresh consideration.

In March this year, the High Court had directed the passport office to take a decision on Mehbooba’s passport within three months.

Hearing on daughter’s passport after two days
The passport has been issued to Mehbooba at a time when her daughter Iltija’s petition is to be heard in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court two days later. In this petition, he has challenged himself to be given a passport for only one country. He has demanded a normal passport.

Mother also got passport
In February this year, Mehbooba had sought External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s intervention in the issue of passports. Mehbooba had said that she has been waiting for the last three years to take her 80-year-old mother on Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Mehbooba and her mother Gulshan Ara were denied passports in March 2021 as well, citing a negative report submitted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. His mother has also been issued a passport two months ago.
