On June 2, a train accident took place in Balasore, Odisha. In this, Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, Howrah-bound Shalimar Express and a goods train collided with each other.

On June 2, three trains collided in Balasore, Odisha. In the biggest accident of two decades, 293 people died and more than 1 thousand people were injured.

The CBI is probing the accident. An inquiry has also been conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on behalf of the Railway Board. On Monday, CRS submitted a 40-page report to the board.

According to reports, the automated signaling system went awry because of incorrect labeling of wires inside the level-crossing location box. Which caused the accident. The mislabeling of the wires in the crossing location box went undetected for years. It also went wrong during maintenance.

After the report came out, the opposition parties are attacking the government. TMC said that due to the negligence of the government, passenger trains have become walking dead bodies. On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said – In the craze of inaugurating Vande Bharat trains, the central government is compromising on basic issues like railway safety.

Big things of CRS report…

  • All the wires were wrongly connected inside the level-crossing location box. Because of that, there was a disturbance during the maintenance work, due to which wrong functions were being indicated. Couldn’t find out about it for years.
  • The signaling department is being held primarily responsible for the accident. The report also names the station master who failed to detect the fault in the signaling control system.
  • The location box diagram was also used for the location box of Bahnaga Bazar, another place in Balasore. It was a wrong move, which resulted in wrong wiring.
  • The Coromandel Express had a green signal for the main line. While the train’s direction deciding system was wrongly pointing towards the ‘Loop Line’.
  • The electric lifting barrier at the level crossing was replaced on the day of the accident. During this, there was a disturbance due to wrong labeling at the terminal. The circuit of the point where the train takes the train from one track to another had already been shifted.
  • On May 16, 2022, a similar incident took place at Bankra Nayabaz station of Kharagpur division due to wrong ring and faulty wire. Even then, if the wiring had been fixed, the Balasore accident would not have happened.
The Railway Board had informed that the Coromandel Express collided with a goods train parked on the track, then rammed into the bogies of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Coromandel.

TMC bid- Passenger trains have become morgue
Reacting to the report, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien accused the central government of prioritizing PR over the safety of passengers. He said that the Center ignored the issues raised by the opposition regarding the Indian Railways. The TMC MP claimed that passenger trains have become walking dead bodies in the country.

He said that the opposition parties often raised serious issues related to Indian Railways in the Parliament and also gave suggestions for their improvement. No one paid attention to them. In the current government, public relations are given more priority than the safety of passengers.

Coaches of Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express (12841) and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express (12864) scattered after the accident in Balasore.

Railway safety is not just a matter of clicking photos: Congress Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the report has revealed what we have always been saying. In its obsession with tinkering with special cadres to focus on Vande Bharat and bullet trains, the government has compromised on fundamentals. Railway safety is not just an issue of clicking photos.

Supriya Shrinet said that all the lies of the government have been exposed by this report. It is the responsibility of the government to take the passengers traveling in the railway to their destination safely. Our appeal is that don’t get into the business of serving hot food in trains and starting a new Vande Bharat.
