It has been learned that from the former ministers, MLAs to the chairman of the District Development Council had encroached.

The first phase of the anti-encroachment drive in Jammu and Kashmir has been completed. During this, large scale land and properties have been vacated in the Union Territory. Their market value is about one lakh crore rupees. Officials said that about two lakh acres of land was freed in the massive campaign. More than 1 lakh acres of land was made free in Jammu.

On the other hand, encroachments were removed from about 90 thousand acres of land in Kashmir. Officials said that even before this, an anti-encroachment drive was carried out, but they were often politically motivated. Such campaigns used to stop after a few days of starting. This time it has been a historic campaign. For the first time such a huge public property was taken back from the illegal occupants.

The administration claims that this campaign will continue till the illegal encroachment is completely removed.

Former ministers, from MLAs to the chairman of the District Development Council had encroached
It was learned that Altaf Kalu, a former National Conference MLA, had acquired the land by tampering with land revenue records. They encroached about 13 acres of government land. Along with this, it was given on rent to the army at Ashmuqam in South Kashmir.

National Conference leader Ali M Sagar, former MLA Ghulam Hasan Khan, former Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu, former Plahi MLA Prem Sagar Aziz, Kathua District Development Council Chairman Col (retd) Mahan Singh, NC MLA Majid Larami, Congress leader Peerzada Mohd. Sayeed and others. Many hotels built on government land have also been sealed.

Policy is being made for the poor and small holders
The poor and political parties also staged protests to stop the anti-encroachment drive. Only after this, the government is formulating a policy to give relief to small holders and poor people to save its image and to contain the anger.

Then: The campaign went on, but the leaders and the court were not together
An attempt was made to launch the campaign in October 2020. Then bulldozers ran over dozens of shops in Pulwama district of South Kashmir. Then stopped in December. The judiciary, then, was not politically supported.

Now: Court’s order, the administration executed
This year the government launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in support of the judicial order. Instructions were issued to the revenue officers to remove encroachments by January 31, 2023. Daily reports were asked.
