The Aam Aadmi Party has again suffered a major setback in Gujarat. In a jolt to AAP in Surat, 2 more of its councilors have joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Just 6 days ago, 6 councilors had joined BJP. In this way, now the number of AAP members has come down from 27 to 15.
AAP became the opposition party by winning 27 seats.
In the Surat Municipal Corporation elections in February 2021, AAP performed brilliantly and became the main opposition party by winning 27 seats in the 120-member Municipal Corporation. The BJP had got 93 seats, while the Congress’s account could not even be opened.
Both the councilors of Surat’s BJP office wore saffron.
BJP is luring councilors
The state unit of AAP alleged that the BJP was luring and threatening its corporators. AAP corporator Dipti Sakaria, in a video statement, alleged that she was invited to a BJP minister’s residence in the state capital Gandhinagar, where she was offered money in exchange for joining the BJP.
