After the Army and the Airforce, the Indian Navy will now deploy BrahMos missiles in strategically important maritime areas. Retired Navy Chief Vice Admiral Satish N Ghormade told news agency ANI on Saturday that Bramhos will be deployed in areas where there is the highest threat from China and Pakistan.
Explain that on March 30, the Ministry of Defense had signed an agreement of Rs 1700 crore with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. Under this, it was decided to deploy Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Battery (NGMMCB-LR) and BrahMos missiles near the sea coasts. Their delivery to Navy will start by 2027.
Ghormade said that the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently approved the proposal of 17 warships. These include two important proposals including six next-gen missile vessels and 11 next-gen offshore patrolling vessels (OPVs). This is a big decision to enhance the capability of the Indian Navy.

Ghormade said that the deal for Next Generation Patrolling Ships would enhance the Navy’s surveillance capability in an important region like the Indian Ocean. This will help us in tracking and monitoring mission based deployment. We will get 11 OPVs by 2026. Their construction has been given to Goa Shipyard and some other companies.
With the arrival of these ships in the Navy, the combat capability of the Navy will be further strengthened. Apart from this, operations like anti-piracy, counter-infiltration, anti-poaching, anti-trafficking, non-combatant evacuation operations, search and rescue will be beneficial.
BrahMos will neutralize the threats of China-Pak
Satish N Ghormade said that the threat of China and Pakistan in the maritime areas will now be monitored by BrahMos missiles. All of them will be equipped with the updated technology of BrahMos. This will neutralize any threat coming from enemy countries. He said that the special feature of the new version of BrahMos is that it can target land and air apart from the sea.
How did BrahMos get its name?
BrahMos has been developed under a joint agreement between India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPOM. BrahMos is a medium range stealth ramjet supersonic cruise missile. This missile can be launched from a ship, submarine, aircraft or land.
It has also been claimed in some reports that this missile has been named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Muskva River of Russia. It is believed to be the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in the world.
This year the indigenous BrahMos missile took part in the Republic Day parade.
BrahMos at a glance

- There are also four types of BrahMos missiles. These include surface-to-surface, air-to-surface, sea-to-surface and under-sea missiles.
- BrahMos is among the fastest missiles in the world. It flies at a very high speed at a low height from the ground, due to which it is not easy to catch it with the anti-missile system. This is the reason that this missile is capable of carrying nuclear weapons for a long distance in a short time.
- Pakistan has subsonic missiles named Babur and Raad which are capable of hitting surface to surface.
