Zelensky visits Ukraine’s war-torn east for the first time since the invasion

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the country’s war-torn east for the first time since the Russian invasion, on a visit to the Kharkiv region, from which Moscow has retreated in recent weeks.

Zelensky’s office is shown on Telegram wearing a bulletproof vest and heavily destroying buildings in and around Kharkiv.

The Ukrainian leader later said that he had fired the local head of the SBU security service on a trip for not working to “defend” the city.

“I came, traced and fired the head of the security service Ukraine For the fact of the (Kharkiv) region that he did not work on the defense of the city from the first days of the full-scale war, but only thought of himself,” Zelensky said in his daily national address.

“On what motive? Law enforcement officers will find out,” he said.

His office said 2,229 buildings had been destroyed in Kharkiv and the region.

“We will restore, rebuild and bring life back. Kharkiv and all other towns and villages where evil had come, ”she said on her Telegram account.

Ukrainian leaders have been based in Kyiv since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale attack on February 24.

In the video, Ukrainian soldiers show Zelensky destroying trucks on the side of a road passing through a farm.

“In this war, the occupiers are trying to squeeze at least some result,” Zelensky said in a later post.

“But they should have understood long ago that we will defend our land till the last man. They don’t have any chance. We will fight and we will definitely win.”

He also met with local officials – the governor of the Kharkiv region and the city mayor – to discuss reconstruction programs for the region.

He called on them to “find good projects” to rebuild the destroyed areas.

“This is a chance for such districts to be a new face,” Zelensky said.
