Zelensky Visits Region in Eastern Donetsk Which Russia Annexed in September

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to the eastern Donetsk region, which Russia had declared as its territory months ago. News agency BBC One report said that Zelensky visited an area near Bakhmut. Recapturing Bakhmut from Russian control is now the primary objective of the Ukrainian army which retook Kherson last month.

Parts of Donetsk are under the control of Russia or under the jurisdiction of pro-Russian Donetsk People’s Republic forces led by Denis Pushilin since 2014.

Ukraine said Russia carried out attacks in the central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring one person in the city of Kryvyi Rih. BBC quoted regional head Valentin Reznichenko as saying.

Russia also targeted critical civilian infrastructure on Monday, waging a psychological war by attacking power stations and exposing its citizens to hypothermia and other ailments amid snow and sub-zero temperatures.

according to Zelensky BBC Reportedly, Bakhmut has told the soldiers that he is proud of them because they have an area that protects not only eastern Ukraine but the whole country. He expressed confidence that Ukrainian forces would recapture Crimea, which was annexed by Russia eight years earlier.

Russia’s efforts in the Bakhmut area are being led by private military contractor Wagner Group. The scenes of the battles being fought at Bakhmut have been compared to earlier World Battles as trenches, burnt trees and mud became prominent features of the war landscape BBC said in his report.

Both sides are believed to have suffered heavy losses and Russia continues to attempt to seize more territory.

Zelensky met with soldiers in Sloviansk, 45 km from Bakhmut, and later visited wounded Ukrainian soldiers in the north-eastern Kharkiv region.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting to discuss domestic security following drone attacks on two airfields deep inside Russia that resulted in deaths and injuries.

The Ukrainian military reportedly attacked airfields in Ryazan and Saratov in south-central Russia, killing three soldiers, wounding two and damaging two aircraft. They also attacked an airfield outside the Russian border city of Kursk with a drone, setting an oil tanker on fire. No casualties were reported from Kursk.
