Former legspinner-turned-commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said India should use the Sri Lanka series as an opportunity to see Varun Chakravarthy make up for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 squad, as Yuzvendra Chahal has stabilized. Sivaramakrishnan said the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka is an opportunity for Varun but urged him to improve his fitness and fielding.

“There is a possibility (in Varun’s T20 World Cup India squad) because we have seen that over the years, Yuzvendra Chahal has not been very successful. Kuldeep is out, not even playing for KKR so you have to look for unknown objects,” Sivaramakrishnan said at a press conference organized by Sony Network.

“When you are playing Sri Lanka, the world will be watching. If someone is good and totally different from other traditional bowlers like Varun Chakraborty, he just needs to play a few games, develop confidence.
“He has a problem with injuries, he should maintain his fitness and gain confidence from this tour. If he does, he should be one of the candidates the team should be looking for. Because change is constant. When someone stabilizes, when your main bowler like Chahal stops, you should look at other options.”
Asked whether fitness tests like yo-yo should be relaxed for rare players like Varun, Sivaramakrishnan said:
“Really up to the team management. You can’t have different rules for different people. Ideally you want good fielders, so yo-yo tests are done, so people can get on the field quicker. One More to convert the batsman from 1s to 2s… When you bat with Virat Kohli, you have to run fast. Same with bowlers.
“Varun is not particularly good with the bat. Two out of three departments, you should be good. He has to work really hard on his fielding if he has to wear the Indian blues.”
Elaborating on Chahal’s problems, the former India bowler said that he has come to know after his initial success in international cricket.
“Technically, he has to diversify his bowling. Your success in international cricket, in the first year or two, will bring you a lot of success. But over time they will find you. With modern technology, analysis is very easy. All you need is a good guy to figure out what ball he throws. He bowls in the leg-stump line most of the time, and he is not a big turner of the ball. The success he had in the IPL a few years back was when he used to bowl from outside and force the batsman to get out. If you bowl on the leg-stump line, the batsman just has to pick the length and hit the line.”
