Hisar: Haryana Police on Sunday said cricketer Yuvraj Singh He was arrested in the case of an alleged casteist remark in compliance with an order of the High Court and was released on bail.
Singh was accused of making casteist remarks against another cricketer during an Instagram chat last year.
“We only made a formal arrest and he was released on bail in compliance with the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court,” Superintendent of Police (Hansi) Nitika Gehlot said over phone.
DSP (Hansi) Vinod Shankar said, “Yuvraj Singh came to Hansi on Saturday and we made a formal arrest. He was released on bail after a few hours.”
Observing that the Haryana Police was only seeking Singh’s “formal arrest” in the case, the High Court had last week directed that the cricketer, if he is arrested, on joining the probe with the investigating officer, would be punished. Expressing regret over the comments, Singh had earlier tweeted, “I understand that when I was chatting with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was inappropriate. However, as a responsible Indian I would like to say If I have unintentionally hurt someone for feelings or emotions, I would like to express my regret for the same.”
