The new YouTube Shorts feature is similar to a feature on other short-form video apps such as Instagram’s Remix feature for Reels, or TikTok’s Stitch feature.

YouTube has announced that it is now letting creators use video clips from billions of YouTube videos for their shorts, the company announced in a blog post. YouTube Shorts are short videos from Google-owned video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. These are limited to 60-second durations and now, creators can split 1 to 5 second segments into eligible long-form videos and short ones to use in their short-form videos. Previously, producers were only able to split short audio clips from other videos on the platform.

When a user creates a short using another video’s clip, the original video is credited via a link. The library of videos available for remixing is huge, but creators have the option to exclude their content from being remixed. The new feature is currently running only for iOS user, and Android Users are expected to get it later this year.
