IPL 2022 proved to be a great season for him but very few know that it was head coach Ricky Ponting who was instrumental in getting the best out of Kuldeep Yadav.

Last few years have been heavy for Kuldeep Yadav. Be it in the IPL or for Team India, the chinaman bowler has always impressed everyone with his performances. However, before this life was not easy for him. By 2021, Kuldeep was struggling with his performance and was dropped from the Indian team as well. His last season with Kolkata Knight Riders was nothing short of a nightmare as he was on the bench for the entire season. At the same time, injuries continued to add to his woes and filled him with self-doubt.

But 2022 was a ray of hope for Kuldeep when he was picked by Delhi Capitals in the mega players auction. He flourished under Rishabh Pant and ended the season with 16 wickets. Overall it was a great season for him but very few know that it was head coach Ricky Ponting who was instrumental in getting the best out of Kuldeep.

Kuldeep recently opened up about his signing by Delhi Capitals in 2022. Speaking on a YouTube show titled ‘Breakfast with Champions’, he said that Ponting called him before the season and assured that the spinner would play all 14 games.

“When I joined Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting sent me a message. I had a word with him. They had planned to have me in the team. He said one thing to me in the first match, ‘Whoever you are, you will play all 14 matches. You are my main player. Don’t think that you will be thrown out for not performing. Then I thought I am finally settled in the team,” Kuldeep said on the show.

He further revealed his tough days when he underwent surgery and was on the road to recovery. He said that he used to get irritable and have mood swings but he got constant support from Yuzvendra Chahal, who was also a part of the show.

“I am close to Chahal in the Indian team. We have played together for so many years. So, I have discussed everything with him after my surgery. We talked a lot when I was injured. Because my mood kept changing again and again. I was getting angry after every 15 minutes. So, I talked to him a lot and he used to give me a lot of confidence. And he used to say, “Never mind. You will come back with a bang”, Kuldeep said on the show.
