The Param Vir Chakra awardee was conferred with the Honorary Captain Rank on the eve of 75th Independence Day.

Param Vir Chakra awardee Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Yogendra Singh Yadav was conferred with the Honorary Captain Rank on the eve of 75th Independence Day on Saturday.

Yadav was just 19 when he was awarded the country’s highest military award for his bravery during the Kargil conflict.

At least 337 serving non-commissioned Indian Army personnel were awarded the honorary captain and 1,358 were awarded the honorary lieutenant rank.

The Honorary Commission (Honorary Captain and Honorary Lieutenant) of the Indian Army is awarded to Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) serving on Independence Day and Republic Day in the last year of their service in recognition of their exemplary service and contribution.

The ratio of honorary commission to honorary lieutenant has been 12:1000 since 1984 and the proportionate vacancies for honorary captain.

Recognizing the contribution of JCOs, the ratio for Honorary Lieutenant has now been revised to 15:1000.

“This will give more opportunities to junior commissioned officers to become honorary commissioned officers before their retirement,” the Indian Army said.
