Hyderabad: A 45 year old woman from Yemen With a history of hearing impairment for 10 years and a hearing aid for both ears cochlear implant in the city to restore his hearing.
Over time, her hearing deteriorated to such an extent that she suffered severe hearing loss and did not receive any benefit from the use of hearing aids, doctors said, adding that patients followed only through lip reading.
Doctor Sampurna GhoshENT and Head-Neck Surgeon, Medicover Hospital, who advised the patient to undergo cochlear implant surgery, said that the woman has received an implant on one ear.
“After a month of therapy, he is very happy to be back to normal and able to participate in verbal communication,” he said.
Ghosh said cochlear implants are more common in India in terms of congenital hearing loss in children, but are not very popular when it comes to adults.
“The cochlear implant is promising when hearing loss is very severe and is beyond the scope of common hearing aids. It is a safe surgery even for older people suffering from age-related deafness,” said Ghosh.
