With the pandemic taking center stage for the majority of 2021, we were relaxing on our couches and beds in front of streaming devices. Major successful shows aired this year, and fans watched over many of the previous year’s seasons. Although the pandemic caused a lot of production houses to halt their shoots, some new releases and delays led to new seasons debuting on the Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ platforms, which caught the attention of web series fanatics. We take a look at some such web-series here.
squid game
The Squid game was a breakout success of 2021, indicating that the battle royale genre is an untapped market content-wise. The Last-Man-Standing theme combined with components of survival, exploration, and scavenging became everyone’s #1 streaming recommendation and dominated the Netflix Top 10. By the end of September 2021, the South Korean series that criticized meritocracy had reached the top of IMDb’s Moviesmeter. The chart inspired many memes, think pieces, and Halloween costumes.
Easttown’s Mare
Prior to its premiere in April 2021, the crime drama series with Kate Winslet sporting a Delco accent did not receive as much pre-release hype. But by May, everyone was talking about the show and Winslet’s portrayal of the mare Sheehan. According to IMDb, it remained a top 10 title for its entire seven-episode run. Nominations for four Emmy Awards, five Critics’ Choice Award nominations, and two Golden Globe Awards are testament to how critically acclaimed the show and its characters have been since its release.

We bid a tearful farewell to our favorite bank robbers in red in the final episode of the famous bank robbery series Money Heist aka La Casa de Papel. While many of the most popular web series had disappointing endings, the final episode of Money Heist was the final show. The tension for the big ending develops well, with concise and simple writing and a finale for practically all the characters.

It’s easy to forget that the cunning Lord of Mischief is actually a villain because of Tom Hiddleston’s wit and charm. In addition to his penchant for deception, Loki captivated Marvel fans week after week, remaining in the top ten of IMDb’s Moviesmeter for all seven weeks. Although fans are already awaiting confirmation of a second season, the show plays a big part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing the complex concept of alternate dimensions that can be seen in upcoming films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and can be expected to join. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumia. Loki also has the highest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In terms of average review scores, WandaVision has the highest IMDb Metascore. It wasn’t the first in Disney+’s Marvel series, but an unexpected turn of events made Wanda Maximoff the MCU’s quirky, welcome guide to the all-new fourth phase. WandaVision’s plot became more adventurous, more risky as it took on a high-concept story, and one that took the time to transform the studio’s two less-popular characters into properly icons, in order to obsess over the fantasy. WandaVision is a reminder of how engaging the studio’s projects can really be when it manages to find the perfect balance between mystery, intrigue, and fantastic narrative.

Manoj Bajpayee’s portrayal of Shrikant Tiwari had garnered a cult following when it debuted in 2019. The Family Guy, with an 8.8 IMDb rating, became an iconic espionage thriller series featuring Bajpayee, who plays a man who lives a double life in secret. The most entertaining aspect of the Family Man serving in the NIA unit is his willful ignorance of family problems, which makes the character’s comments hilarious. Samantha Prabhu’s performance in the second season also garnered keen interest among critics. Story packed with outstanding performances, Kirkiraa and Tangled received 11 nominations for the Filmfare OTT Awards, winning five of them. It has got an 8.8 IMDb rating.

Bhuvan, in the role of his signature grown man, is so lovable and captivating that you can’t help but fall in love with him and his common man’s troubles. Bhuvan himself portrays all three characters as well as six additional characters in his popular YouTube channel BB Ki Vine. These characters are also famous on YouTube and have a huge fan following.
