Year Ender 2021: Mammootty’s The Priest and One Two Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup, the films that ruled the Malayalam film industry

Year end 2021: It is almost the end of the year and the good news is that with the reopening of cinema halls, both the cine-lovers and the film fraternity are overjoyed. The Malayalam film industry (Mollywood) saw the release of some of the most successful films in theaters post the lockdown. Here are the top 5 highest grossing Malayalam movies to watch at the end of the year:

Directed by Josephine T. Chacko, it is a supernatural horror mystery film that collected Rs 53 crore worldwide. The Mammootty-starrer earned over Rs 36 crore in Kerala in its opening weekend of four days. The film became the first Malayalam film to earn Rs 1 crore in Saudi Arabia.

One

This Mollywood flick became the second highest grossing film of 2021 in Mollywood. It collected Rs 50 crore, while the budget was Rs 10 crore. The film, which released in March this year, was directed by Santosh Vishwanath. The political drama film starred Mammootty, Gayatri Arun and Murali Gopi in the lead roles.

Dry

This crime thriller has crossed the Rs 35 crore mark worldwide. It collected Rs 17.35 crore in India and Rs 21 crore overseas. Directed by Srinath Rajendran and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, the hit film proved to be a huge commercial success. It was a box office hit not only in Kerala, but also in the United Arab Emirates. The film, which released in May, collected a total of Rs 38.25 crore.

Another Mollywood hit to garner huge BO collection was directed by Tharun Murthy. Its box office collection was pegged at Rs 32 crore. This cyber crime thriller was made in a budget of Rs 3.5 crore. The film was released in February. It had an ensemble cast including Balu Varghese, Mamta Baiju, Lukman Avran among many others.

A techno-horror film, for which Rs 5.5 crore was spent, did a phenomenal business of Rs 21 crore. This was another Mollywood film which got huge commercial success despite its release amid the pandemic. It was directed by Ranjit Kamala Shankar and Salil V, and starred Manju Warrier.
