Xiaomi smart glasses with round frame, 5MP camera and in-built mic unveiled

Xiaomi has unveiled its new smart wearable, simply called Xiaomi Smart Glasses. Smart glasses look like any other normal glasses, but have MicroLED optical waveguide technology, which is known to have higher brightness and longer lifespan than OLED. Weighing in at around 51 grams, the Xiaomi Smart Glass can display messages and notifications, make calls, navigate, capture photos and translate text right before your eyes. Recently, Facebook also unveiled similar smart glasses in partnership with Rayban. However, its smart wearable has also raised some alarm with privacy advocates.

Starting with the design, the Xiaomi smart glasses come with a round frame, and it looks like the device is taking inspiration from superhero Iron Man’s smart glasses ‘EDITH’, which has a metal bar just above the edge of the nose. . The left hinge houses a 5-megapixel camera that can also be used as a scanner for real-time translation. Xiaomi smart glasses have a built-in microphone and proprietary translation algorithm. The specs come equipped with a quad-core ARM processor, battery, touchpad, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, Android operating system and more. Xiaomi states that by adopting optical waveguide technology that refracts light at 180 degrees, the MicroLED display “accurately transmits light rays” to the human eye through the micro-grating structure of the optical waveguide lens. The device integrates a total of 497 components which include miniature sensors and communication modules, so the wearable is not just a “second screen” for a smartphone, but a standalone device capable of managing daily tasks.

In addition to basic notification and call display, the glasses can also perform functions such as navigation, photo taking, teleprompter, and real-time text and photo translation, the company reiterates. With usage in mind, critical interaction logic has also been implemented to minimize interruptions at inconvenient times and timely display of important information. The Xiaomi Smart Glasses only have a 2.4mm x 2.02mm display chip. The company hasn’t disclosed pricing and availability details or addressed privacy issues related to the glasses.
