Xbox gamers may soon start receiving ads in free-to-play games

Microsoft is planning to introduce ads in its free-to-play Xbox console games, media reported.

An Insider report quoting sources claimed that the ads would not disrupt the game but would appear on billboards at a racing game.

Microsoft is also concerned that the ads may “annoy” players, and plans to create a “private marketplace” to allow only select brands in the new program.

According to the report, Microsoft will not use data collected from the Bing search engine and other services for targeted ads on the Xbox gaming service.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the experience for players and developers alike, but we don’t have much else to share,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Insider.

Console game users have also seen in-game ads in the past, such as EA Games allowing ads in the Madden NFL, Skate, NHL, and NASCAR franchises, as well as Burnout Paradise.

Meanwhile, Microsoft recently released a significant update for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles that will enable it to download system as well as game updates while in Energy Saving Mode.

Microsoft is also planning to introduce an Xbox Game Pass family plan this year.

The family plan option will reportedly provide access to Xbox Game Pass for up to five players and will be cheaper than the cost of separate accounts.

Microsoft will reportedly integrate its Family Account system, which the company also uses for its Microsoft 365 Family subscription, reports The Verge.
