  • Controversy has arisen over the rejection of the tableau of Republic Day parade of some states.
  • Non-BJP ruled states said the rejection was an ‘insult’ by the government and it hurts the sentiments of the people
  • Center clarified that more proposals are rejected than accepted because of paucity of time

The Center has rejected the allegation of states that the boycott of their tableau from the Republic Day parade was an insult, set a wrong precedent and insisted that it is an expert committee that shortlists.

“This is a wrong precedent, which has been adopted by the chief ministers of the states to portray the outcome of an objective process between the Center and the states as a flashpoint. This goes a long way in harming the federal structure of the country. Perhaps the chief ministers don’t have a positive agenda for themselves. Year after year they have to resort to the same old trick using misinformation,” government sources said.

It said, “It is clearly associated with regional pride and has been projected by the central government as an insult to the people of the state. This script also runs almost every year.”

A total of 56 proposals were received from states and central ministries and out of which 21 were shortlisted, the statement said. The proposals from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal were rejected by the subject expert committee after due process and deliberation.

“Given the paucity of time, it is natural to reject more offers than the accepted ones,” the sources said.

According to the report of PTI, Defense Ministry officials follow the same process of selection every year.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in not removing the tableau of their respective states.

Stalin said the removal of the tableau would deeply hurt the sentiments and patriotism of the people of Tamil Nadu. Expressing surprise over the non-inclusion of the tableau of West Bengal, Banerjee said such a move would cause “pain” to the people of her state. Several politicians from Kerala have also raised the issue of the Centre’s exclusion of its tableau to criticize it.

However, it should be noted that Kerala’s tableau proposals were accepted through the same process and system in 2018 and 2021 under the same Modi government, and Tamil Nadu’s in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021, according to the statement. stated in. , adding that tableau proposals of West Bengal were accepted in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021.
