WFI Election: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections are due to be held on July 6. Returning Officer Mahesh Mittal Kumar, who is a former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, informed this in a statement. This comes a day after Kumar was appointed as the returning officer by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, after meeting the protesting wrestlers on June 7, had said that the WFI elections would be held by June 30 but it was clear that meeting the deadline would be difficult as a 21-day notice was needed to convene the special team. it occurs. Disputes within state bodies

It is learned that some state units which were earlier disbanded by WFI have staked claim to participate in the elections. A source in the IOA ad-hoc panel said, “Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Karanataka have sent names to two different bodies for inclusion in the electoral rolls for the WFI polls. The returning officers will decide their fate.” ” WFI Cases.

The WFI disbanded Karnataka, Haryana and Maharashtra at its executive committee meeting in June 2022 for various reasons including “corruption and mismanagement”.

Will Brijbhushan’s relatives/supporters contest the elections?

The wrestlers called off their agitation till June 15 after Sports Minister Thakur assured the wrestlers that the government would not allow any family member or associate of WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to contest the elections.

WFI has 25 affiliated units, covering the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Delhi. Each state unit may send two delegates and each delegate shall have one vote.

Therefore, there will be 50 votes in the electoral college for WFI elections. According to the WFI constitution, state units can only nominate representatives who are members of their executive bodies.
