Jasia Akhtar becomes 1st cricketer from Kashmir to be signed by Delhi Capitals in WPL 2023 auction

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction 2023 took place in Mumbai on Monday, February 13, with records being broken and many cricketers’ lives changed forever.

The likes of Smriti Mandhana and Ashley Gardner hit the pay dirt as they were signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants for Rs 3.40 crore and Rs 3.2 crore respectively.

Apart from the biggest names in world cricket, there were also several Indian players who grabbed headlines at the auction. Jasia Akhtar became the first cricketer from Kashmir to be selected in the WPL auction. Born in Shopian, the 34-year-old was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 20 lakh.

409 cricketers including 246 Indian players were auctioned. In fact it was Indian cricketers who earned life-changing sums as Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma and Renuka Thakur all became millionaires.

Akhtar may not have got such a huge amount but she was very happy to be selected in the auction. Speaking to Rising Kashmir, he said, “The starting bid was Rs 10 lakh, but the auction was finally sealed at Rs 20 lakh.”

The experienced batsman currently plies her trade for Rajasthan at the domestic level.

She was into athletics before being introduced to cricket by one of her coaches, which changed her life.

Delhi Capitals welcomed Jasia to the franchise with a heart-warming tweet.

“Jasia Jaisi Koi Nahi, #CapitalsUniverse is ready to get you!” wrote the Delhi-based franchisee.

Capitals spent Rs 11.65 crore in the WPL auction and signed a total of 18 players.
