WPL Auction 2023: From Alana King, Laura Wolvaardt to Danny Wyatt, many foreign players went unsold

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction 2023 took place in Mumbai on Monday, February 13, with an astonishing 409 players being auctioned.

While Smriti Mandhana became the costliest player in the WPL 2023 auction when RCB spent Rs 3.4 crore to acquire her services, Ashley Gardner was bought by Gujarat Giants for Rs 3.2 crore.

However, a number of high-profile players such as Alana King, Laura Wolvaardt and Suzie Bates went unsold, along with a lot of surprises.

Check out the list of high-profile names that went unsold in the WPL auction 2023:

Suzy Bates

New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates kept her base price of Rs 30 lakh but despite having 3683 runs in the shortest format, the 35-year-old failed to bid.

Laura Wolvaardt

Veteran South African batswoman Laura Wolvaardt also failed to attract any bids despite keeping her base price of Rs 30 lakh. He has played over 48 T20Is, scoring 867 runs with a strike rate of over 100.

tammy beaumont

England batsman Tammy Beaumont, who is likely to open the innings, kept her base price of Rs 30 lakhs but went unsold. He has played 99 T20Is, scoring 1721 runs in the shortest format.

chamari athapathu

The captain of the Sri Lankan team, Chamari Athapaththu also failed to place any bid in the WPL auction 2023. The 33-year-old has played 108 T20Is, scoring 2264 runs and will lead Sri Lanka in the ongoing T20Is. World Cup 2023 in South Africa.

Amy Jones

England wicket-keeper batsman Amy Jones is known for her attacking cricket, however, despite playing 81 T20Is, the 29-year-old found no takers and went unsold.

Australian spinner Alanna King going unsold in the WPL auction will probably go down as a huge blow despite having roots in Chennai.

Katherine Sciver-Brunt

The 37-year-old shut down potential bidders by putting his name in perhaps the costliest set at a base price of Rs 50 lakh. However, the England batsman did not bid.

Danny Wyatt

Another English cricketer, Danny Wyatt has vast experience of playing in the shortest format, having played 138 T20Is and probably put off any potential bidders by setting his base price at Rs 50 lakh.

Simran Dil Bahadur

The Delhi-born batter has played for Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge in the past, although the 23-year-old’s last T20 cap was way back in June 2022.

Swagatika Rath

Swagatika plays her domestic cricket for Odisha. It kept its base price of Rs 30 lakh and could not attract any bidder and remained unsold.

Anuja Patil

Anuja Patil represents Maharashtra in domestic cricket and the 30-year-old from Kolhapur has played 50 T20 matches for India. India But even their base price of Rs 30 may have proved too expensive.
