Gujarat Giants’ season started on a negative note after Mumbai Indians were handed a crushing 143-run defeat and their skipper Beth Mooney retired hurt in the first match of the WPL.

Australia star Beth Mooney and Gujarat Giants started WPL 2023 on a disastrous note with an embarrassing 143-run defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians in the opening match on Saturday night. Mooney was forced off the field after injuring his knee while failing to chase down the target at the DY Patil Stadium.

Reportedly, Mooney was taken to a hospital in an ambulance after the accident and with Gujarat Giants set to face UP Warriors tonight, his participation remains doubtful.

Talking to the media after the match, Gujarat Giants vice-captain Sneh Rana said that the injury is yet to be ascertained by the physio. “It is yet to be updated by the physio,” said Rana.

Rana said that the team was guilty of making many mistakes and said that they would work on them. “The atmosphere was very different and it was a big match for a lot of people. We have got a lot of players from the domestic circuit. Yes, fielding played a major part in today’s match and I think it was a lesson for all of us.” (experience). There are some that quickly dissolve in the atmosphere, but others take their time,” he said.

We will talk about the mistakes made after this match. But we have given a clear message to all the players that they need to keep their heads high at all times. The tournament has just started, we need to boost our spirits. We will come back stronger,” she said.

Rana was all praise for Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored a blistering half-century. “He played unbelievably well, I think he’s been in great form for the last few series. It’s a great thing for Indian cricket. The way he showed his class today, the way he showed his class as a captain. The innings he played was brilliant,” said Rana.
