WPL 2023 Player Auction Likely to be Held in Delhi in 2nd Week of February

News18 CricketNext has learned that the mega WPL auction will be held in New Delhi

The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is expected to take place in March. BCCI has already successfully conducted the bidding of WPL teams in the form of Adani Sportsline Private Limited (Ahmedabad), IndiaWin. Play Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai), Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd. (Bangalore), JSW GMR Cricket Pvt Ltd (Delhi) and Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd (Lucknow) emerged victorious to lay their hands on the franchises ahead of the inaugural season.

However, BCCI is yet to make any announcement regarding the auction of women cricketers for WPL 2023. News18 Cricket Next It is learned that the auction of WPL will be held on February 10 or 11 in New Delhi.

Indian cricketers including Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Thakur as well as star players from around the world are expected to put their names up for the auction.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday revealed that the women’s team’s bid for the WPL broke the record set by the inaugural men’s IPL in 2008.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bid for the teams of the inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we have secured Rs 4669.99 crore in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sporting fraternity,” tweeted Shah.

“#WPL will bring much-needed reforms in women’s cricket and ensure a comprehensive ecosystem that benefits every stakeholder,” she added.

Meanwhile, Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd spent a whopping Rs 1,289 crore to buy the Ahmedabad-based franchise – the highest ever spent on one of the five WPL teams. The next highest on the list was Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd who bought the Mumbai-based franchise for Rs 912.99 crore while Capri Global bought the Lucknow side for Rs 757 crore which was the lowest amount spent in the auction.
