WPL 2023: Hayley Matthews Survives Bizarre DRS Goof up in Mumbai Indians’ Victory Over UP Warriorz

Mumbai Indians continued their unbeaten run in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League as Harmanpreet Kaur struck an unbeaten half-century to outclass UP Warriors.

In a match filled with remarkable performances from both the sides, there was a bizarre DRS glitch as MI all-rounder Hayley Mathews fell victim to a bizarre DRS error in the fifth over of the game.

Sophie Ecclestone’s fifth delivery of the game caused controversy and confusion as she appealed for LBW against Matthews. The umpire’s original decision was given as not out, but UPW captain Alyssa Healy asked for a DRS review.

The review came out in favor of the Lucknow-based team and the umpire was asked to reverse his decision and signal Mathews out, which he did.

But, there was more drama in store as it turned out that the DRS umpire had reviewed a different delivery and given the decision accordingly for that particular ball.

Once the DRS umpire corrected his mistake and reviewed the correct delivery, it was found that the correct decision went in favor of the MI player.

Mathews was eventually dismissed for 12, while his opening partner Yastika Bhatia scored a quickfire 42 off 27 balls.

Maharashtra would chase down the target with eight wickets to spare in 17.3 overs riding on Harmanpreet’s unbeaten 53, ably supported by England’s Nat Sciver.

MI’s Sayka Ishaq was once again the pick of the bowlers as she took 3/33 with the ball to take her 12 wickets in 4 matches.

Emilia Kerr added two more wickets for MI, while Rajeshwari Gaikwad struck with a scalp of her own.

Mumbai remain undefeated after winning all their four games in the WPL and have now defeated all other teams in the league.

MI have 8 points from 4 matches and are at the top of the table, followed by Delhi Capitals with 6 points.

In as many matches, UP Warriors are third with 4 points and Gujarat Giants are fourth with 2 points.

Royal Challengers Bangalore is the only team that has opened its account and is sitting at the bottom of the ranking table.
