Compromised sanitation can wreak havoc in communities by contaminating our food and water and spreading serious diseases that affect lives. World Toilet Day is celebrated every year on 19 November to bring awareness about the importance of toilets and sanitation in our lives.

World Toilet Day: History

World Toilet Day was an initiative of a certain Jack Sim from Singapore, who founded the World Toilet Organization NGO in the year 2001. It was his idea to use this day to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. The initiative was supported by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (Susana). In 2010, the United Nations recognized the Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWS) as a fundamental human right.

In the year 2013, on 24 July the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its 67th session passed a resolution by which it designated 19 November as World Toilet Day.

It recognized the unsatisfactory progress made in providing basic sanitation services to all and how its lack negatively affected people’s health, their economic and social status. 122 member states adopted the resolution.

UNGA also highlighted the negative effects of inadequate sanitation on water resources and our environment. The international organization also urged all its member states to end open defecation, promote the importance of sanitation, treatment of sewage among others.
