The general public as well as decision makers, venue managers and owners of entertainment venues are among the many target groups. WHO also calls on governments, industry partners and civil society to raise awareness and promote safe hearing. No matter how old you are, here are some preventive measures to follow to prevent hearing loss.

Preventive measures for deafness:

1. Vaccinate girls and women of childbearing age to protect against rubella, which can cause sensorineural hearing loss.

2. Keep the ears clean, free of dust, water and wax. Do not scratch the ears with sharp objects like match sticks, pencil hairpins, as they can injure the ear canal.

3. Protect yourself from getting hit near the ear as it can lead to hearing problems which are irreversible.

4. Do not put oil or any other liquid inside the ear to clean the ear without the doctor’s advice. See a doctor if you experience swelling or discharge in the ear.

5. Do not go swimming in unclean water as it can lead to ear infection. Put cotton in your ears while swimming and especially diving.

6. Do not get your ear cleaned by roadside people as they use unhygienic equipment which can lead to infection and damage. Use cotton buds or visit a doctor to clean the ear.

7. Avoid going to places with loud noises as it can cause serious damage to your ear.

8. If you are working in loud areas, use ear protectors or earplugs.
