At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka late on Sunday. Officials suspect that the blast was caused by a gas cylinder explosion. Those injured in the blast narrated the horrific scene, saying that fireballs were going through them and pieces of glass were raining. “So far we have learned that seven people have been killed in the blast,” Dhaka Police Commissioner Shafikul Islam told reporters at the scene in the Moghbazar area.
Brigadier General Sajjad Hussain, chief of the fire brigade, said preliminary evidence suggested that the gas cylinder exploded, but “we are yet to know how exactly it happened.”
Hussain said, “Gas cylinders were kept in a restaurant on the ground floor of the nearby building and air conditioners in a showroom above. There were also gas cylinders at the road construction site at the scene. An inquiry has been initiated.” .
TV channels reported dozens of injuries, mostly bus passengers and passersby. The injured are being treated in three hospitals. Doctors said many of them suffered serious injuries.
According to neighborhood residents, the explosion caused panic in the city, with television footage showing broken pillars, pieces of concrete and glass on a road in the central part of the nation’s capital.
50-year-old Tajul Islam, who was injured in the blast, has suffered back injuries and hearing loss due to the blast. Says Tajul, “I was in a bus when the blast happened. I jumped out of the vehicle through a narrow window, initially I thought the gas cylinder had just exploded… I have never had such a big explosion in my life. “
Another eyewitness said he saw a fireball passing over his head and the explosion made everything around him dark and smokey, while pieces of glass began to rain from above. According to eyewitnesses, buses and cars collided soon after the explosion, while panicked passengers struggled to get out of the vehicles.
