World Environment Day: Dia Mirza reveals 7 changes she has made in her life to ensure sustainable development Specific

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June. This day was first observed in 1974 by the United Nations to raise awareness to protect our surroundings. This day is also known as Eco Day or Environment Day. Every year this day is celebrated with a special theme. This year’s theme is Only One Earth. This is the campaign slogan, with a focus on “living in harmony with nature”. We spoke to the UN Environment’s Goodwill Ambassador for India, Dia Mirza, who revealed the seven changes she has made in her personal life since becoming an environmental activist.

The 40-year-old actress said, “There have been big changes. The first and primary change is the understanding that all my actions, all my consumption patterns have little impact on the environment and that human health and the health of the natural world are completely intertwined.” So, some of the things I always share with young children as actions I’m able to do, that I look forward to continuing to do, and over the years, are 7 actions. So , I call them the seven colors of the rainbow. It becomes easier for people to remember what these actions are.

Action 1, is to refuse all single-use plastic, carry your own cutlery, and carry your own water bottle, even when you are hosting parties. Whatever it is, any festival, any occasion, any event, refuse single use plastic.

The second is to take a short bath. Make your shower the ultimate song. Try and shower only with a bucket so that you don’t waste water. Of course, always repair all drips. So, if you see a dripping faucet, get it fixed. If you can go an extra mile, install a water check meter in your society. So that you do not have overflow of tanks and wastage of water.

The third thing that I think I am capable of doing and everyone else can do is to practice a mostly vegetarian diet. So eat plant based food as much as possible. It makes a big difference. Along with this, you can eat seasonal, local and unpacked food in an even better way.

The fourth thing I do is that I prefer to give people the experience of growing trees in their name rather than gifting material things on special occasions. So, because of that I have been able to grow 8,000 trees so far and the numbers are increasing and it is really good. I love to see how people react and react to receiving a gift like this. It’s quite special.

The fifth thing I think we can all do very easily is to switch from regular CFL bulbs to LEDs. It certainly makes a big difference when we use technology and hope that is energy efficient that is low carbon emissions, CFLs are not good for the environment, LEDs can help.

Next thing anyone can or should do and I’ve really enjoyed managing waste at home for years. By segregating your compostable kitchen waste, all your vegetable peels, fruit peels, and any kind of food waste—all can be composted at home. And all your dry waste can go anywhere. It becomes more easily reusable. When you mix your wet and dry waste, it creates a lot of toxicity, and it’s not good for anything—not soil, air, or water.

And the seventh thing I really enjoy doing—is supporting organizations that work to protect wildlife and nature. These are organizations that are always fighting for funds and any kind of help is highly appreciated. Therefore, I try to contribute as much as possible to these organizations. In addition to my time, I find that investing money in nature, giving my money to organizations that protect wildlife and nature, and then investing in companies that are sustainable can make a huge difference.

So these are sustainability practices that I believe will help the environment and the earth and I know everyone can do it. It’s not hard to do,” Diya indicated.

We should join hands to save our beautiful planet because there is no place so beautiful, so alive and so alive in the universe. Let us be more responsible. Happy World environment Day!
