World Cancer Day 2023: For three years – 2022, 2023 and 2024 – the theme of World Cancer Day is “Close the Care Gap”.

World Cancer Day 2023: The second leading cause of death worldwide, cancer kills about 10 million people every year. Seven out of every 10 cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Heartbreakingly, more than 40 percent of these deaths worldwide are preventable through lifestyle changes, regular check-ups, and early detection and treatment.

To raise awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on 4 February. The commemoration aims to bring together various stakeholders including governments, health professionals and the general public to work towards reducing the impact of cancer.

World Cancer Day: History

World Cancer Day came into being at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris on 4 February 2000. It was established by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness of the disease and encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.

World Cancer Day is important because it draws attention to the global impact of cancer. It provides a platform to highlight how important early detection and access to treatment are to reduce the loss of precious human lives. Additionally, it unites campaigns from around the world under one umbrella every year. The day is also a call for individuals, governments and organizations to work together to reduce the adverse effects of cancer on individuals, families and communities around the world.

For three years – 2022, 2023 and 2024 – the theme for World Cancer Day was “Close the Care Gap”. The pressure on the higher echelons of power to participate in this pandemic has been going on for decades.

World Cancer Day is marked by various activities, such as public events, awareness campaigns and educational programmes, to promote cancer awareness. The purpose of these events is to encourage individuals to take action to reduce the impact of cancer on their lives and communities.

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) offers tools and guidance to encourage its member organizations to conduct local awareness campaigns and adapted to the global World Cancer Day message.
