World Animal Day: History

The date of October 4 was chosen in honor of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. This International Day of Action falls on the Feast of Francis of Assisi.

On March 24, 1925, at the Sport Palace in Berlin, Germany, the first World Animal Day was celebrated by Heinrich Zimmermann, a cynologist and animal protection activist. Around 5000 people attended the ceremony to support this great cause.

Originally, he wanted to see it on October 4 (in honor of Francis), but could not due to non-availability of the venue. In 1929, after the continuous efforts of the Cyanologists, the event was celebrated on 4 October.

In May, 1931, at the conference of the International Animal Protection Congress in Florence, Italy, Henrik’s proposal for World Animal Day was unanimously accepted. Later, since 2003, it is the Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-based animal welfare charity that oversees the international festival.
