World Accreditation Day 2022: Theme, History and Significance

World Recognition Day 2022: World Accreditation Day, a joint initiative of International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF), is observed every year on 9 June. The initiative aims to “recognize once, be accepted everywhere”, which works to promote the value of recognition.

World Accreditation Day: Theme

This year, World Accreditation Day will be celebrated with the theme Accreditation: Economic Development and Sustainability in the Environment. The world has been brutal when it comes to exploiting healthy ecosystems as the global economy heavily depends on these ecosystems. However, a significant shift to more sustainable forms of production and a greater focus on carbon removal and climate litigation is the need of the hour.

World Accreditation Day: History

World Accreditation Day came into existence in 2007 through the collaborative efforts of International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF). The first World Accreditation Day was celebrated in 2008 and the theme of that year was Accreditation: Providing Confidence in the Global Market. As the years passed, the day has touched upon various virtues of recognition including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improving the quality of food.

World Accreditation Day: Significance

This year’s theme focuses on increasing climate change, pollution, over-exploitation of resources and habitat destruction – the four main causes of biodiversity loss listed by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Strong policies and processes are essential to combat the evils of climate change. Accreditation and conformity assessment can ensure that global organizations adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of carrying out economic activities.

These would include controlling emitted CO2 levels; Check whether emission limits are within specified and acceptable limits; Clearly defining traceability of organic food among others.

Organizers will provide case studies, supporting materials and research papers to demonstrate how accreditation can support sustainability. A virtual event will also be held on June 9 on the IAF-ILAC YouTube channel.
