Women’s Champions League: Barcelona, Lyon And Bayern Munich Book Knockout Stage Berths With Big Wins

Seven-time European women’s champions Lyon beat Benfica 5-0 in Lisbon on Thursday as Barcelona, who took the crown last season, also pulled off an impressive 4-0 win at Arsenal.

Lyon cemented their place in the knockout stages with a round of group games, while Barca ensured they advanced as group winners.

In Lisbon, Norwegian Ada Hegerberg led Lyon after 34 seconds from a cross by Delphine Kascarino.

Centre-back Wendy Renard took a second-place lead in the 27th minute, meeting a corner under the Benfica crossbar.

In the 40th minute, Hegerberg again won the ball in the field and nodded to Grijs M’Bock, who volleyed against the post and then scrambled to the rebound.

Hagerberg took his second in extra time, again from a Cascarino cross.

In the 51st minute, a substitute Melvin Mallard threw Benfica into the offside trap and put another Signe Brun in front of an empty goal.

“It was very satisfying. We were skilled at the way we played,” Hagerberg said.

Bayern Munich finished second in Group D with a 5–1 win over Hacken in Gothenburg.

Swedish striker Stina Blakstenius gave the home team a lead and victory hope in the 36th minute to keep their chances alive, but Bayern responded with two goals before half time.

French midfielder Vivian Assi equalized after 39 minutes. Jovana Damjanovic gave the visitors the lead in the 45th minute.

The Serbian striker struck again after 55 minutes. Linda Dalman and Lineth Berenstein completed the scoring.

In Group C, Barcelona women took the top spot after beating second-placed Arsenal 4-0 in the rainy Emirates.

Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati ran half the length of the field before slipping in the 21st minute opener.

Striker Jennifer Hermoso extended the lead with a weak-hitting close-range volley, which overtook goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

Swede Fridolina Rolfo hits a 25-yard shot from the post at half-time.

Spaniard Hermoso thumped the ball over the line in the 75th minute.

Barcelona coach Jonathan Giraldez said: “We had 90 great minutes today. But we have to keep improving.”

Arsenal finished second in the group and would advance until they lost five goals or more to Hoffenheim in the final round.

“I’m going to stand here trying to smile. You have to accept that you’re playing against the best team in the world,” Ginsburger said.

Hoffenheim kept their slim hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Denmark’s Koge.

Irish striker Kyra Carusa scored her first goal of the competition to give the home team the lead in the ninth minute, but Austrian striker Nicole Billa converted penalties for the visitors in the 27th and 38th minutes.
