Women not allowed to go out alone, no open shoes: Taliban decree

According to a report in the Associated Press, a schoolteacher from Takhar province in northern Afghanistan said that after the Taliban took over, women were not allowed to go out into the market without a male escort.

Citing families who left their homeland and now took refuge in Kabul, the report said girls riding home in motorized rickshaws in Takhar province were stopped and beaten up for wearing “khula sandals”.

The latest decree reminds Afghans of the pre-2001 Taliban regime when women were not allowed to study and work.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the horrific reports of Taliban persecution on Afghan women and girls.

“I am … deeply disturbed by early indications that the Taliban are imposing severe human rights restrictions in areas under their control, especially targeting women and journalists,” she told reporters on Friday.

As the Taliban march towards Kabul after capturing Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city and several other provincial capitals, President Ashraf Ghani in his address to the nation assured people of destabilization, violence and displacement.

The president said regrouping of the country’s armed forces is a “top priority”.

“In the current situation, realignment of Afghan security and defense forces is our top priority,” said Ghani, ANI credited Tolo News.
