woman found dead at home in the south; husband arrested

A 26-year-old woman was found dead in a suspected murder at her home in the south of the country on Wednesday.

The woman’s husband was taken into custody for questioning and the police started an investigation into the death near the town of Arara Bangev.

According to Hebrew media reports, there were marks of violence on his body.

The Magan David Edom service said it had been alerted to an unconscious woman at Kesafa Junction in the Negev region.

Paramedics who examined the woman declared her death on the spot.

On Monday, there was a Jewish woman found dead in an apartment In the West Bank settlement of Male Adumim, which police were investigating as a murder-attempted suicide. The woman’s death was initially investigated as a suicide, but police later suspected the husband’s involvement, according to Haaretz.

According to reports, after the police traced the man, he first tried to run away but then shot himself in front of the officers, injuring him grievously. Haaretz reported that he was hospitalized in Beersheba in critical condition.

Activists have long complained that not enough has been done to prevent incidents of domestic violence in Israel. In July, Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman ordered NIS 55 million ($17 million) to be immediately allocated to efforts to prevent and treat domestic violence.

The money is partly earmarked to fund the Ministry of Welfare’s National Plan for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, which was approved in 2017 but transferred less than half of the designated funds for its implementation.

A June 1 report by the state controller found that insufficient funding to identify and tackle domestic violence and chaotic policies are hindering efforts to curb the issue. The report said that in 2019, five women were murdered by their accomplices, while the figure rose to 13 last year.
